NEPRA Unveils Harsh Facts about Unfair Billing of Electricity Companies
According to a recent report from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority, some distressing facts have come to light about the electricity companies of Pakistan. According to the report, during. April. to June 2024, more than 1.3 million consumers were given detection bills by power companies worth over Rs35 billion.
The Sukkur Electric Supply Company took the lead in the list by issuing massive detection bills worth Rs13 billion. Other companies which. also followed with the amount issued were HESCO, with a total of Rs7.6 billion, LESCO, and Rs3.7 billion. Another company, PESCO, released over Rs1.5 billion in detection bills to 70,506 consumers.
NEPRA has criticized the companies for passing such bills without verification, and it is seen as a mode of artificially enhancing their revenue. The regulator further said that it also promotes corruption in the sector and passes extra charges to the consumers unnecessarily.
Detection bills have become a serious cause of concern in terms of fair billing of electricity. Detection bills are causing an additional burden on consumers and destroying trust in the electricity sector.
