Pakistan Shipping Companies Should Be Open on Saturdays, Advises Khurram Ijaz

KARACHI – Pakistan shipping companies should remain open on Saturdays, says Khurram Ijaz, an eminent customs and logistics expert. This comes in the wake of recent directives issued by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to enhance trade and bring down the cost of business nationwide.

Ijaz, the former President of the Karachi Customs Agents Association, said that working six days a week can save companies time and money. If shipping companies remain open on Saturdays, they can facilitate faster clearing of goods, decrease cargo delays, and enhance trade services.

“Thank the companies that are already heeding the Prime Minister’s directive,” Ijaz stated. “Due to their Saturday operations, traders are now paying less demurrage charges and saving on container storage rents.”

Despite this, Ijaz also revealed his worry that some companies have quietly reverted to Saturday closings. He warned that this could undercut progress and confuse the shipping community.

He added it’s crucial that every company adheres to the Prime Minister’s strategy to simplify trade and make it more efficient. “This is not merely obeying rules—it’s about assisting Pakistan’s economy to grow,” Ijaz further said.

Ultimately, he urged all shipping firms in Pakistan to keep operating on Saturdays. “Even a small adjustment like this can yield big outcomes. Together, we can create a better and quicker trade system for all,” he added.
