Pakistan is now the world’s third-largest exporter of sesame.
Islamabad: Pakistan has achieved third rank in the world as a sesame exporter, its exports have crossed $1 billion annually, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain disclosed while speaking at the Annual Regional Review of International Support Team of the Asian Development Bank.
Sesame production has shown unbelievable. 455% growth during the last five years. It produced sesame valued at around 1.119 million tons in a year with an increase of 327% of export volume by 0.760 million tons, and therefore an upsurge in export earnings by 366% amounting to US$1.073 billion.
The minister attributed this success to the inclusion, of sesame in Pakistan’s National Oilseeds Enhancement Program (NOEP). He highlighted the fact, that improvement in processing technology, value addition to the products, and new markets globally would help sustain such growth.
In addition, Pakistan has strengthened its agricultural ties with Turkey. Both countries have agreed to enhance cooperation under the Strategic Economic Framework (SEF). The focus will be on improving trade, following international Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) standards, and encouraging Turkish investment in Pakistan’s agriculture and livestock sectors.
The two countries also agreed to come. up with a practical plan that will focus on technology transfer, disease control, and expansion of agricultural trade to enhance economic growth and productivity.
