China Interested in Desalination and Infrastructure Projects at Port Qasim
ISLAMABAD: A delegation from a Chinese construction company visited Pakistan to explore investment opportunities in the maritime and infrastructure sectors, especially focusing on solving water shortages through desalination projects.
The six-member team met with Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, on Tuesday. The minister welcomed their interest and said Pakistan is ready to support mutually beneficial projects.
Key Focus: Desalination at Port Qasim
One of the main topics of discussion was the installation of seawater desalination plants at Port Qasim. These plants would convert seawater into clean water, helping both residential areas and industries in regions where water is scarce.
The Chinese company expressed a strong interest in investing in water treatment technology and supporting Pakistan’s climate resilience goals.
“These desalination projects can provide clean water and help local industries grow,” the minister said.
Other Investment Areas Discussed
The Chinese team, led by Wang Yaodong, also showed interest in:
Highway and road development
Improving connectivity between ports and industrial zones
Supporting sustainable growth and economic development
Wang Yaodong said, “We are ready to bring modern technology and investment to help Pakistan grow sustainably. Desalination is one way we can make a real difference.”
Future Plans
The minister invited the delegation to visit Pakistan’s coastal areas to explore investment opportunities on the ground. He also encouraged their participation in upcoming maritime investment forums.
Both sides agreed to:
Keep talking
Conduct feasibility studies
Identify important projects for future partnership
This growing cooperation between Pakistan and China is expected to lead to long-term strategic investments in maritime infrastructure, clean water, and transportation.
