Pakistan Olympic Association leadership elections: Arif Saeed and Khalid Mahmood likely to take top jobs

The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) is preparing to hold its key leadership election scheduled. on December 30 in Lahore. Two prominent persons are in the running to be unopposed for the key posts of POA president and POA secretary: Arif Saeed, president of the Pakistan Rugby Union (PRU), and Khalid Mahmood, president of the Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF).

    Leadership Nominations and Support
Both Arif Saeed and Khalid Mahmood have submitted their nomination. papers that are strong to the POA electoral college. With both government support and members of POA under his consideration, Arif is aiming to bring unification into both realms. On the other hand, Khalid Mahmood has received far-reaching endorsements to be in the Pakistan Olympic Association secretary’s seat for the fourth time in consecutive terms.

Role of Arif Saeed in Pakistan Sports
Arif Saeed has been leading, the Pakistan Rugby Union for 25 years and has always funded its activities from his own pocket. His services to sports are not limited to rugby as he has been a member of the Interim Management Committees of PCB under both Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf. His leadership skills have earned him respect across all sectors of sports.

The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has also endorsed Arif’s candidature, thus an end to the past disputes between the PSB and POA may be possible. His election may prove a better opportunity for coordination between these two vital organizations to focus on national interest.
    Challenges and Opportunities Ahead
One of the significant issues the POA election has been facing is the National Sports Policy, which only allows the officials to hold office for two four-year terms. This policy had led to disputes in the past and was so serious that it put the POA on suspension by the IOC in 2015. If Arif Saeed comes into power he can easily sort out these problems and mend ties with the PSB.

    Khalid Mahmood’s tenure successful
Khalid Mahmood has been the secretary of POA since 2012, working closely with former president Lt Gen (R) Syed Arif Hasan. He has overcome numerous challenges, including a near-suspension of the POA by the IOC His re-election for a fourth term reflects the trust and confidence that the sports community has in his ability to handle complex governance issues.

This is an important landmark for Pakistan sports governance because both Arif Saeed and Khalid Mahmood will take significant positions that will determine the future of the Pakistan Olympic Association. As they proceed, leadership will be instrumental in meeting the challenges of Pakistan, Olympic Association and enhancing cooperation towards the development. of sports in Pakistan.
