Pakistan Cuts EV Import Tariffs to 1% in Significant Green Policy Reversal
Pakistan is taking a giant leap towards cleaner transportation with a new green policy aimed at developing electric vehicles (EVs). The government has significantly slashed the import tariffs on electric vehicles and their components. The move is part of the nation’s push to favor more environmentally friendly and sustainable means of transportation.
As per Asim Ejaz, the General Manager of the Engineering Development Board, duties on electric vehicles have been lowered from 30% to as little as 1%. Duties on motorcycle parts have been reduced from 15% to 1% as well. This decrease is likely to make EVs cheaper and more accessible to the general population.
Ejaz further noted that there had been consumer concerns in the past regarding the reliability of electric vehicles. Those concerns had also impacted consumer confidence. But now, with new technology in electric vehicles, all those concerns were being resolved and the vehicles are becoming more reliable.
The action brings Pakistan into line with worldwide trends towards clean transport. Much of the rest of the world is moving to electric transport, and Pakistan’s policy shift promises economic dividends, particularly by taking the country out of its high-cost fuel imports.
