US‑China Trade Tensions Rise: WTO Warns of Global Impact

Global Trade Under Threat as US-China Rivalry Intensifies
WTO Sounds Alarm After Imposition of Heavy US Tariffs on Chinese Goods
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has sounded a serious alarm regarding global trade following the United States imposing new tariffs on Chinese goods. The WTO stated that these measures could result in “severe negative consequences” for the global economy.

    What Happened
US President Donald Trump recently signed new taxes (tariffs) on Chinese imports. Some of the tariffs reach as much as 245%, on industries such as electric cars and strategic minerals. These actions are part of Trump’s efforts to cut the US’s dependence on Chinese goods and penalize what Washington considers unfair trade practices.

China retaliated by raising tariffs on US goods, some as high as 125%.

    Why This Matters
These tit-for-tat tariffs between China and the US are creating a great deal of uncertainty for global markets and businesses. The WTO cautions that this type of trade war has the potential to damage economic growth globally.

    A Bigger Concern: Critical Minerals
The US has begun considering adding tariffs on critical minerals—minerals that are vital to items such as electronics and clean energy. Experts describe this as a gamble because the US relies substantially on China for these minerals. China supplies most of the globe’s supply of critical minerals and has already begun restricting exports.

    China’s Response
China’s Foreign Ministry stated that the US must refrain from applying pressure and threats. They think that both countries should communicate respectfully and come to a reasonable solution.

China also condemned the US for interfering with the global supply chain, stating that it violates international trade norms.

President Xi Calls for Asian Unity
At the same time, Chinese President Xi Jinping is in Malaysia and other nations in Southeast Asia. He is calling on Asian countries to remain together against what he says amounts to “unilateralism and protectionism” or what the US is doing in terms of its trade policy.

Addressing Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Xi stated that nations of the region can cooperate to safeguard their economies from international political tensions.
