The federal government is looking to complete the Thar coal railway line to Port Qasim by the end of 2025. The project is important in terms of transporting Thar coal to the port to facilitate energy production in Pakistan. The 105-kilometer railway line is being constructed with the collaboration of the federal and Sindh governments.
Besides, the government is also planning a $500 million battery storage facility in the south to fortify the nation’s power grid. The project will also assist in storing wind power energy. The government is negotiating with global institutions such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Islamic Development Bank to finance the project.
The Power Ministry has also requested Rs. 79 billion for the 2025-26 Public Sector Development Program (PSDP). This budget will finance four large projects: the battery storage scheme and three new transmission lines of Ghazi Barotha, North-South, and Karachi to Central Punjab.
These endeavors are included in Pakistan’s strategy to increase power generation and develop the nation’s power facilities.
