Pakistan Introduces First-Ever Digital Identity Card
Pakistan has taken a giant leap towards going digital with the launch of its first-ever digital identity card. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) unveiled the new system on its 25th anniversary.
This digital ID will be included in the Pak ID mobile application, where citizens can store their ID cards on their phones. A new digital verification system is also in the process of being created, which will enable individuals to easily and securely verify themselves for different services.
The pilot launch of this digital ID will take place on Independence Day 2025 as part of the World Bank-funded Digital Economy Project.
The launch ceremony took place at NADRA headquarters with the most important officials, including the founder Chairman, Major General (Retd.) Zahid Ehsan, present. Federal Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi appreciated the initiative as a significant milestone for enhancing Pakistan’s identity management.
For its 25 years of service, the State Bank of Pakistan specially minted a coin, while Pakistan Post had issued a special commemorative stamp. A documentary highlighting NADRA’s history was also televised during the function.
The authorities pointed out how NADRA has helped people in distant areas with identification services and assisted law enforcement agencies. They also motivated the people to get the identity cards of expired relatives cancelled for maintaining records precise.
